It's been ages since we had a work in progress post! I admit, the main reason for this is I hate hate hate the new lj update page and I've been avoiding it like the plague. But that's not fair to anyone still watching the comm, so hey, let's have a new post!

Some questions to get us started - none of them are mandatory, and you can make up/answer your own questions as well.

- What are your BSC fic goals for 2013?
- What are your fic goals (in general) for 2013?
- What are you working on at the moment?
- How many BSC works do you have in progress at the moment?
- What prompts in your table are speaking to you at the moment?
- What prompts in your table are you really worried about finishing, ever?
- What are you hoping to see in the BSC fandom this year?

Feel free to share snippets of your stuff in the comments! And please don't forget, this comm is available at any time, even if you just want to post something like, "I have 200 words of this plot bunny and I need someone to cheer me on!"

I've recently joined the group and I am currently writing a slightly A/U series of one-shots based on Sharon/Richard's relationship, starting with "For A Second Time"-which is the reason that it is slightly A/U as I always thought it a bit odd that Sharon and Richard never kept in contact while she was out in California (also I've made them a bit younger as I always imagined Richard and Elizabeth Thomas to be the same age, with him a bit younger than her). It takes place when Mary Anne and Dawn are 7 and is about the second time Richie and Sharon see each other since they split up.

Another one I'm planning on doing is for the prompt "Snob"-it will take place during their time at SHS and be about how Sharon finds herself falling for Richard despite the pressure from her friends and family to date someone more suitable.

The third one I have planned so far is for the prompt "Mother"-Even though Sharon is just her father's girlfriend the summer before eighth grade, Mary Anne is prompted to ask her some questions about growing up that she is too embarrassed to ask Richard or Mrs. Thomas/Kishi about.

What are the stories you all have been working on?

Inspired by [livejournal.com profile] lucida's Complete Guides to Byron & Jordan Pike, I've written one for Janine Kishi. It's so long that it spilled into the comments, LOL, but I guess that's a good thing =)

The Complete Guide to Janine Kishi

(and here's the quick guide, listing Janine's courses, reading material, and outfits/fashions)

I'm also hoping to write guides for Charlie and Sam Thomas, but that's a project for the new year :P

Just a quick one. . . does anyone know if the waiters at the Rosebud Cafe wear uniforms, or just the standard black pants, white shirt that most restaurants use? (For some reason I feel like this has been asked before, very recently, but I can't find it.)

pikes + phone = ?

One day I will write something other than Pike or Spier fic.

Erm, random question, and once again, relating to something so tiny I doubt it will even matter, but:

Is it ever explicitly stated how the Pike kids answer the phone? Specifically Claire? I imagine the older kids would say something like, "Hello, Pike residence," or "Hello, Jordan speaking," or something like that? (Lol I could probably look this up really easily, BUT WHATEVER. These discussions always lead to fun and interesting snippets.)

Is there a greeting so often-repeated that it could be read as "the rule" when it comes to answering the phone at the Pikes'?

I know there are a few times where kids in the BSC'verse are told to check the windows before answering the door, to see who it could be. Are there any similar ~warnings~ when it comes to answering the phone?

Even if canon's not clear, would saying something like, "Pike residence," be normal, or is that too formal for kids Claire's age?

Wow. I very rarely get a plot bunny like this, so I feel like I need to post about it.

You see, California Diaries has just recently moved into my mind (first time reading it) and when it met my story it gave birth to a rabid plot bunny. This WIP has pushed aside my regular writing projects, special projects I was working on, and the BSC meme I was doing. In less then a week it's become the longest BSC fic I've written so far.

I'm not introducing California Diaries characters into my main plot yet (though I do have ideas for that, but I need to finish the books first to see where everyone ends up.) The idea that bit me was to do a CD-style journal entries story of fifteen-year-old Kristy coming out in high school. I'm loving writing it.

So some discussion questions:
1) Which of your BSC stories was the most rabid plot bunny (so far)?
2) If you've written anything in journal entry style, did you find it as wonderfully easy to write as I'm finding it? Or was there another story where the style was just flowing onto your keyboard?

MATCH/MASH

Okay, you know that playground game where you write down a bunch of guys, a bunch of cars, a bunch of numbers, and cruel cruel chance determines your future? And your friends would mock you for whatever you ended up with?

I grew up with that game going by the name of MATCH (Mansion, Attic, Toilet, Church, House). I want to throw a passing reference to this game into one of my fics, but this is a game that has a fair amount of regional discrepancies, so...

yay MATCH! )

From now until November 30, come fill out an application and find out which BSC member fellow fans think you are more like! Beginning December 1, we will begin stamping as members from the California Diaries series. For more information on how the community works, see this page.

The more people, the better! Hope to see some of you there. :)

(And I have no idea how to tag this!)

Hey ficcers!

I know it's holiday-y over in America at the moment (belated happy Thanksgiving! Hope you all had a wonderful day ♥) and the weekend is here so people with lives aren't going to be sitting around writing BSC fic, but...

We haven't had a WIP/club notebook post for so long! Feel free to continue to post to this over the next few days - or start a new one, if need be! This community is solely for WIP posts and little canon/detail/ridiculous questions, so don't be afraid to busy it up!

Let's chat about what we're writing at the moment for [livejournal.com profile] babysitters100, and if you have any questions about details you want to include in your fic, ask away!

Weird trivia question. . . What are Kristy's sports teams? It's been a while since I've read a lot of the books.

According to the BSC wiki, her dad was a Yankee's fan, but the first game he took her to was the Mets. Does she ever mention which one she roots for (or both?)

Given that, I figure she roots for New York teams, but that still leaves the question of the Giants or the Jets for football. Do the books ever mention that one?

(I know baseball is her main sport, but I would think she'd at least follow a football team. Maybe not so much basketball or hockey, but those would be easy anyway since New York only has the Knicks and the Rangers. Of course with Hockey she might not follow a team at all since according to normal-wiki, Connecticut lost their hockey team in the 90's, and I know that a lot of people around here just ragequit football when the Colts left Baltimore, until we got the Ravens. ANYWAY this is totally not important except to show that I'm putting WAY too much thought into the sports allegiances of a fictional character.)

i've died.

okay, not quite, but my muses have. i used to write like CRAZY, and now i've just completely lost it. even looking at the prompts doesn't help as much as i'd been hoping. i was looking through all of my barely-started pieces and i decided to post them. hopefully, you fellow writers can have a peek and give me some ideas - which ones are good, which ones are crap, where i could go with the stories... any helpful advise would be awesome!

i've posted them all on this livejournal, so please have a read! there is a hilarious (if i do say so myself) crackfic starring jessi, so that's worth a look in itself!! (sorry jessi, but i can't write you seriously!)

thanks bunches!!

Okay, so I've noticed that in the books, all adults (except for step-parents) are "Mrs. or Mr. <last name>."

When I was growing up, we only used that for school teachers or adults we barely knew. Friend's parents, parent's friends, or people I babysat for were all "Miss or Mr. <first name.>" This might be a regional thing, I've heard it's common in the U.S. south and Maryland tends to pick up both southern and northern customs.

It's only come up once in my series so far, and I defaulted to the BSC tradition, but as it comes up again I think I'd rather have kids call the girls "Miss Kristy," "Miss Stacey," etc.

I guess I have two questions, first, if anyone here is from New England, did you call your parents friends Mrs. <last name> all the time?

Second, would it throw anyone off if I used the "Miss <first name>" thing?

Hey, BSC fic writers! :D

Thought this would be cool to share. On her facebook, Ann M. Martin has listed some of her own writing tips, which I'll copy and paste below the cut:

Could anyone buy Byron Pike having a crush on Stacey after book eight? I'm considering it for a prompt on [livejournal.com profile] babysitters100 and was wondering if there was anything hugely problematic to stop it.

Hey guys :)

I thought I'd share the little shuffle writing exercise that's making the rounds at the moment. It's a really good way to just sit and barrel out a load of tiny little ideas all at once and sort of clear your head.

THE RULES:

Choose a fandom and/or character and/or pairing.
Put your iPod/music player on shuffle/random.
Write ten fics inspired by the first ten songs that play. Only write each fic for as long as the song's playing time. On average, this should give you around four minutes per fic.
When the ten songs are finished, you may go back and correct spelling and grammar, but don't add anything else to your stories. Each miniature song fic should only be written during the duration of its own particular song.
You should end up with ten little flash fics for your particular fandom/character/pairing.

I've tried it for other fandoms and it's so much fun. It's actually not as hard as it sounds, and when you're done, you have ten little stories that could possibly be developed into bigger ideas/fics.

I've tried it for the BSC fandom but for some reason I'm failing at it spectacularly. But if you want to see examples, I'll link the other fandoms I've completed below.

I doubt this will work as a [livejournal.com profile] babysitters100 table prompt (though I guess you never know), but it's a fun little exercise, and you could always post it somewhere like [livejournal.com profile] bsc_fiction or [livejournal.com profile] bsc_fanfiction. If anything, it might clear your head, or give you ten little fics that you can develop further and add to in order to tick off a few more boxes on your [livejournal.com profile] babysitters100 prompt table! :)

My examples:
One Tree Hill
Captain Planet
Cold Case

If you do try it, post a link in the comments so we can all read it! :)
I'm going to give it another proper go once I get some time to myself.
